What Is Mammogram Screening?

Mammography is one of the X-ray methods used for breast cancer examination. It is used as a tool to diagnose breast disease or cancer in women who have breast lumps, pain or symptoms which were discovered by self-examination or clinically.

Mammograms can also be used as a screening examination to look for cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. In Malaysia, the recommendation among the general population is to perform mammograms once every two years for women aged 40 – 74 years.

Mammogram In Beacon Hospital

Beacon Hospital houses the digital mammography system with an option for additional digital tomosynthesis that creates 2D and 3D images of the breasts to rule out tissue overlap and enhance the contrast of masses, hence better quality results.

In addition to providing high-quality images at reduced radiation doses, the system uses Tungsten technology that makes it possible to examine even dense breasts at a significantly reduced dose as the system is able to customise and individualise the breast density and thickness of the patient.

The system also caters to patients’ needs and comfort with its functional design and special mood lighting that reduces discomfort and provides a calming ambience during the screening.

How Much is The Mammogram Screening Price?

Normally, the cost of doing a mammogram screening in Malaysian private hospitals ranges from RM299 to RM400.

With the aim of raising breast cancer awareness and encouraging more women 40 years and above to come forward for regular screening, Beacon Hospital is now offering a Mammogram Screening Campaign, under its CSR programme, at a subsidised rate of RM39.

Treatment options for breast cancer are usually discussed with a breast surgeon or an oncologist (cancer specialist). Breast cancer can be treated in a few ways. It depends on the type of breast cancer and how far it has spread. Individuals with breast cancer often get more than one type of treatment. Among the treatment for breast cancer are:

Immunotherapy:

is a form of cancer treatment that uses or helps your immune system to fight cancer. It is a type of biological therapy and this type of treatment uses substances made from living organisms to treat cancer.

Breast Surgery:

A surgery in which only the part of the breast containing the cancer is removed.

Targeted therapy:

medication for breast cancer work by attaching itself to proteins such as HER2 protein.

Chemotherapy:

is a treatment option that involves the use of chemo medication. Such as Alkylating agents, Topoisomerase inhibitors, Antitumor antibiotics, Antimetabolites, Mitotic inhibitors, and Corticosteroids

Radiotherapy:

is often combined with breast surgery, to enhance treatment. It uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells. Radiotherapy can reduce the risk of local recurrence.

1-week Radiotherapy:

a newly discovered and more effective treatment for early-stage breast cancer by shortening the course of radiotherapy which normally takes 3 weeks to 1 week.
