Caring for the Elderly Men: Complimentary PSA Screening + Blood Test Campaign

By December 19, 2017December 14th, 2022No Comments

Last month, Beacon Hospital gave away 200 Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests to elderly men who were 55 years old and above. In collaboration with Sin Chew Daily, this joined effort was mainly to raise awareness on the importance of having an annual PSA test for early detection.

In general, the prostate is part of the male reproductive system which is a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder in front of the rectum. The prostate plays an important role in male fertility as its main function is to produce fluid that forms part of the semen. Most of the time, prostate problems affect urination and sexual functions of a man.

Also, the prostate is prone to three main conditions such as prostatitis (infection or inflammation of the prostate), benign prostatic hyperplasia (aging-related enlargement of the prostate gland) and prostate cancer (the growth of cancerous cells inside the prostate). Though it may sound scary, but fear not – these problems are actually detectable via a PSA test!

Early detection prompts early treatment and better chances at recovery. It is our hope that this campaign had and will continue to encourage more to acknowledge the importance of getting a PSA screening!
