A complex 11-hour surgery using Malaysia’s first silver-coated total femur megaprosthesis helped preserve the patient’s limb and restore knee function
From the day a distal femur giant cell tumour was discovered, this patient’s journey has been one of courage and resilience.
Eight surgeries followed — the first four to eradicate the tumour, and the next four in a battle to save the lower limb. It began with implant loosening, followed by a fall that resulted in a fracture around the implant. The patient then endured two separate infections, nerve pain, and scars that tell a story of survival. With the looming possibility of amputation, it was a time when hope seemed far away.
But hope returned at Beacon Hospital.
On 11 June, Dr Choong Chee Leong, drawing on his expertise from the UK, performed an extraordinary 11-hour surgery. He removed the old implant, thoroughly cleansed the area, excised infected tissue, released and reconstructed the soft tissues, and introduced Malaysia’s first silver-coated total femur megaprosthesis.
This breakthrough technology, designed to combat infection and preserve limbs, gave the patient not only a new implant but also a renewed chance at life. From a straight, non-functional knee, he now has a knee that lives up to the motto: “Now everyone can fly economy class” — because he can finally bend his knee and sit comfortably again.
