Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) is a targeted radiation treatment given during cancer surgery. Right after the surgeon removes the tumour, a miniaturised X-ray source delivers a complete course of radiation directly to the tumour bed, where cancer cells are most likely to recur. At Beacon Hospital, IORT is used for selected breast cancers and brain tumours.
The aim of IORT is to deliver a precise dose of radiation to the intended area while minimising the risk of damage to neighbouring healthy tissue. Because the radiation is given during the same operation, it can reduce the number of separate hospital visits for external beam radiotherapy.
Targeted radiation is delivered to the designated area directly, hence, minimising the radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.

As radiation is delivered directly to the tumour site with the optimal dose, it could potentially improve local tumour control therefore, lowering the risk of recurrence.
