What is a Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) test?

A Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) test is an advanced screening tool that helps identify multiple types of cancer at an early stage, before symptoms appear. It can be performed using methods such as buccal swabs, saliva, and blood samples.

At Beacon Hospital, we now offer an innovative ctDNA-based MCED test that only needs a 10mL blood sample for a comprehensive cancer screening.

What is circulating tumour deoxyribonucleic acid (ctDNA)?

All cells in the body contain deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the molecule that carries the genetic instructions needed for cell growth and function. As cells break down, they release DNA fragments into the bloodstream, known as cell-free DNA (cfDNA).

When cancer cells undergo this process, they release a specific type of cfDNA called circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA). Using advanced next-generation sequencing, ctDNA can be analysed to detect probable presence of cancer to allow for early detection, treatment monitoring, and even identifying signs of recurrence earlier than other tests can through a simple blood test.

Why choose the MCED test?

The MCED test works differently from conventional tumour marker tests and standard screening programmes. It identifies ctDNA signals that may indicate the early presence of several cancer types before symptoms appear. It offers a quick, minimally invasive way for cancer screening, giving you and your doctor valuable time to act sooner, when treatment may be more effective.

Using SPOT-MASTM technology, Beacon Hospital’s MCED test offers 78% overall sensitivity in identifying the 10 types of cancers, dependant on the stages of cancer, which include the top five most common cancers in Malaysia:

A positive result allows for timely follow-up with confirmatory and diagnostic tests (e.g. imaging, medical procedures) and customised treatment planning.

Who should consider this MCED test?

Individuals over 40

Individuals who are smokers, or consume alcohol regularly

Individuals who are diabetic

Carriers of Hepatitis B and C

Individuals with family history of cancer, even more so if first degree relatives

The MCED test is recommended as an adjunct to your annual health screening.

What are the benefits of MCED test?

  • Early DetectionThe test can detect cancer signals at an early stage, even before symptoms appear.
  • ConvenientOnly a single visit of blood draw is required for 10 main types of cancer.
  • AccurateThe test demonstrated high accuracy in identifying healthy (cancer-free) individuals, with a specificity of 99.8%, it correctly identified 99.8% of those without cancer (less likely to generate false positive results).
  • EfficientScreens for multiple cancers in a single test while also complementing existing screening methods for a more comprehensive approach to early detection

The MCED test is not a replacement for standard screening methods, but a valuable complement to existing cancer screening tools.

At Beacon Hospital, we are committed to providing cutting-edge cancer care. Speak to our doctors to learn if ctDNA MCED test is right for you.

Early detection is crucial.

It can lead to simpler treatment options, better outcomes, and higher survival rates.
