A CT scan revealed suspicious findings in both the colon and lung, raising concern for metastatic cancer. The case was reviewed through a multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussion involving our Thoracic Surgeon, Nuclear Medicine Physician, Colorectal Surgeon, Pulmonologist, Oncologist and Interventional Radiologist to determine the best diagnostic and treatment pathway.
To establish a definitive diagnosis, the consultants proceeded with Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), a minimally invasive procedure used to obtain tissue from lung lesions and lymph nodes.
Biopsy results confirmed that the lung lesion was a metastasis from a colorectal tumour, a crucial finding that allowed the patient to proceed directly to colorectal tumour removal surgery without delay, while avoiding additional invasive investigations.
This case highlights how advanced technology, combined with multidisciplinary expertise, can accelerate diagnosis, reduce unnecessary procedures and guide patients towards the right treatment pathway at the right time.
