What is nuclear medicine?

Nuclear medicine is the usage of a minimal, controlled amount of radioactive substances to diagnose and treat a broad span of diseases.

It is a medical specialty in which radioactive substances or radiopharmaceuticals are administered; through injection, oral pills, or inhaled, into the patient’s body to generate images of internal body components for diagnostic purposes and the subsequent delivery of suitable treatment options.

When it comes to treatment, nuclear medicine, namely radionuclide therapy, helps not only in treating prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumours but also thyroid disorders and other malignancies.

The radioactive substances are either injected intravenously or swallowed by the patients. These radioactive substances carry radiation specific to the targeted organs or cells, are taken up by the cells, and destroy the particular cancer cells.
