Halcyon™ Radiotherapy 2.0

Beacon Hospital is the 1st Southeast Asia hospital to introduce Varian Halcyon 2.0 machine to its cancer patients. It can be used to treat head & neck, lung, breast, prostate, cervix and other forms of cancer.

This new radiotherapy machine improves treatment time considerably (treatment time can be as short as 1 minute plus).

On the safety aspect, it received United States FDA 510 approved since June 2017.

Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) harnesses the power of linear accelerators to revolutionize cancer treatment. Enable delivering radiation to the tumour while safeguarding the surrounding healthy tissue.

RapidArc® Radiotherapy

RapidArc® Radiotherapy is an advanced form of IMRT sculpts a 3D dose distribution with a 360-degree gantry rotation in a single or multi-arc treatment.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a non-surgical radiation therapy used to treat functional abnormalities and small tumours of the brain.

Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT/SRT)

Stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT / SRT) gives radiotherapy from many different angles around the body. It is mainly used to treat smaller-sized tumours in lungs, liver, lymph nodes, spinal cord, and brain.

Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT)

Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) is the use of imaging during radiation therapy to improve the precision and accuracy of treatment delivery. Making this a great for more precise targeting tumour.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is the difference between Varian Halcyon and other radiotherapy machines?

Introduced in 2017, Varian Halcyon is the latest radiotherapy machine which delivers treatment fast, accurately and is built with patient comfort and safety in mind. For example, a 2 partial arc RapidArc lung treatment session can be completed in approximately 2 minutes (imaging – 15 seconds and treatment – 1 minute 30 seconds). The dual-layer multi-leaf collimator comes with a stacked and staggered design, with interleaf leakage of 0.01%, which means the risk of unnecessary radiation to healthy tissue nearby is low.

2. How many radiotherapy sessions are needed?

The side effects vary depending on the body area being treated with radiotherapy. Common side effects you may experience include fatigue, nausea, and skin changes. Your consultant will elaborate more on these and other side effects that you might experience.

3. Will there be side-effects after the treatment?

4. When can I resume my daily activities after undergoing radiotherapy?

Some may feel fatigue, shortly after treatment, while others only feel it after a few sessions of radiotherapy. You can resume your daily activities if you do not feel tired and your doctor has given you the clearance to do so.

Eligibility

Open to Malaysian citizens only.
Patients who are seeking radiotherapy and/or radiosurgery treatment are applicable for this program.
Patients who are of low income group, financially challenged, exhausted their finances or have insufficient medical insurance coverage.

Application Overview

Patients are required to consult oncologist as an outpatient (consultation charges apply) in Beacon Hospital.
Once the treatment plan is established, the attending oncologist will then refer the case to Beacon’s CSR office for financial assessment and eligibility.
It will take approximately 1 – 2 days to process the application.
Once the application is approved, the patient will be provided with a guarantee letter, which will enable the patient to get the treatment done at the agreed subsidized cost.

This program is open to Malaysian citizens only.
This program is applicable to low income patients who are seeking radiotherapy and/or radiosurgery.
Applicants are required to fill up application form and submit with supporting documents to CSR department for assessment and approval.
