What is dermatology?

Fundamentally, dermatology is a field dedicated to the professional diagnosis and treatment of diseases concerning the largest organ of our body – the skin. It is led by dermatologists, who are skin specialists medically trained to treat conditions of the skin. However, there’s more to that. Dermatologists also deal with issues beyond the skin, such as concerns with your hair, scalp, nails, and the mucous membranes that line your nose, mouth, as well as eyelids. Besides, they are able to address cosmetic disorders like hair loss and scars.

Breaking down what a dermatologist can do

As experts in the care of the skin, dermatologists are uniquely skilled in the following:
  • Diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers
  • Management of dermatitis, which is irritation or inflammation of the skin. It usually causes itching and manifests itself in the form of dry and flaky skin, rashes, and blisters
  • Identification of telltale symptoms of problems inside your body by medically examining your skin condition
  • Perform surgical procedures and techniques that hone in on treating dermatological diseases and disorders
  • Perform cosmetic works to treat cosmetic problems involving the skin and hair
