What is Low dose radio-iodine(I-131) treatment?

Low dose radio-iodine (I-131) treatment is a form of radiation therapy used to treat certain thyroid conditions, such as hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer as well as commonly used to treat hyperthyroidism, a condition characterized by an overactive thyroid gland.

Radioactive iodine I-131 is a form of iodine that emits radiation. It is administered orally, either as a liquid or capsule. Once ingested, it is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and concentrated in the thyroid gland. The radioactivity destroys the cells of the thyroid gland, reducing its activity.

Low dose radio-iodine treatment is typically administered on an outpatient basis for hyperthyroidism/ Grave’s disease and micropapillary thyroid carcinoma. The treatment is usually safe and effective, but certain precautions need to be followed to minimize radiation exposure to others. Most of the radioiodine that does not go to the thyroid tissue is eliminated from the body through urine, saliva, sweat, and bowel movements within the first few days after treatment.

It is crucial to note that the specific details of low dose radio-iodine treatment, including the dose and precautions, may vary depending on individual circumstances and the guidance of healthcare professionals.
