Nephrology

What is nephrology?

Nephrology is a specialised medical field that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of kidney diseases and disorders.

This includes conditions affecting the kidneys, urinary tract, and related systems that regulate blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and waste elimination.

Nephrologists are experts in treating a wide range of conditions, from chronic kidney disease to acute kidney injuries using advanced medical therapies and treatments.

What Does a Nephrologist Do?

A nephrologist's role is highly specialised and involves comprehensive patient care:

  • Diagnosis: Collaborating with primary care physicians, urologists, and other specialists to accurately diagnose kidney conditions through laboratory tests, imaging studies, kidney biopsies, and advanced diagnostic procedures.
  • Treatment Planning: Creating individualised treatment plans based on the patient's specific diagnosis, stage of kidney disease, overall health, and lifestyle factors.
  • Medical Management: Providing comprehensive medical treatment including medication management, dietary counselling, and lifestyle modifications to slow disease progression and manage complications.
  • Dialysis Care: Overseeing and managing patients requiring dialysis treatment, including haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Common Conditions Treated by a Nephrologist

Nephrologists manage a diverse array of kidney-related conditions, including:

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): Progressive loss of kidney function over time, often due to diabetes or high blood pressure.
  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI): Sudden loss of kidney function, often reversible with prompt treatment.
  • Diabetic Nephropathy: Kidney damage caused by diabetes, one of the leading causes of kidney failure.
  • Hypertensive Nephropathy: Kidney damage resulting from high blood pressure.
  • Glomerulonephritis: Inflammation of the kidney's filtering units (glomeruli).
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease: A genetic disorder causing cysts to develop in the kidneys.
  • Kidney Stones: Formation of hard deposits in the kidneys that can cause pain and blockages.
  • Electrolyte Disorders: Imbalances in sodium, potassium, calcium, and other essential minerals.
  • Acid-Base Disorders: Problems with the body's pH balance that the kidneys normally regulate.

Types of Nephrology Treatments

Modern nephrology utilises a range of treatment approaches tailored to the patient and condition:

  • Conservative Management: Early-stage kidney disease treatment focusing on lifestyle modifications, blood pressure control, diabetes management, and medications to slow disease progression.
  • Haemodialysis: A treatment that uses a machine to filter waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys can no longer perform this function adequately.
  • Peritoneal Dialysis: A treatment that uses the patient's own peritoneal membrane in the abdomen as a filter to remove waste products and excess fluid.
  • Kidney Transplantation: The surgical placement of a healthy kidney from a donor into a person with kidney failure, offering the best long-term treatment option for end-stage kidney disease.
  • Advanced Therapies: Including immunosuppressive treatments for autoimmune kidney diseases and emerging therapies for various kidney conditions.

When Should You See a Nephrologist?

You might be referred to a nephrologist by your family doctor if you have a condition that affects your kidneys. Consider a consultation if you have:

  • Chronic kidney disease or declining kidney function as shown by blood tests.
  • Diabetes or high blood pressure that may be affecting your kidneys.
  • Blood or protein in your urine, or abnormal urine tests.
  • Recurring kidney stones or urinary tract infections.
  • Swelling in your legs, ankles, or around your eyes.
  • Persistent fatigue, nausea, or loss of appetite that may be kidney-related.
  • Family history of kidney disease or genetic kidney disorders.
  • Need for dialysis or kidney transplant evaluation.
At Beacon Hospital, our nephrology specialists provide comprehensive kidney care and treatment, and consulting with one of them is the best way to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your specific kidney condition.
