
Beacon Hospital’s Clinical Oncologist Dr. Kua said that for early-stage breast cancer patients, returning to work after completing treatment — provided their physical condition allows. Not only it does not increase the risk of recurrence, but also help patients to regain their confidence, reintegrate into their daily life, and improve their mental well-being.
She recommended patients to take 4 to 6 weeks off post-surgery, before going back to work, and choose the roles that match their physical capacity, for instance, those with flexible hours or desk-based roles. On the other hand, high-stress jobs or busy service industries may not be too suitable.
Dr. Kua also reminded patients to appropriately lower their work expectations, return to work gradually, and communicate actively with employers to adjust responsibilities, while ensuring sufficient rest and maintaining a positive mindset to support long-term recovery.
