Osteoporosis is becoming more common in Malaysia, but many people don’t know they have it. In fact, 80% of people who suffer fractures from weak bones don’t get diagnosed or treated, which leads to more fractures within two years.

The Bone Health Alliance Malaysia (BHAM) is working to raise awareness and promote healthy bones through regular check-ups, staying active, and preventing fractures.

By 2050, hip fractures in Malaysia are projected to increase by 3.5 times—the highest rate in Asia—costing the healthcare system over RM 530 million.

The average hospital stay for a hip fracture costs RM 24,000 over seven days, excluding rehabilitation or nursing home care costs.

Early detection through bone density scans can help prevent fractures and save money in the long run.

However, a recent BHAM survey revealed that 96% of people are unaware of the risk factors for osteoporosis, highlighting the urgent need for greater public awareness and preventive measures.

How to Prevent Bone Loss

The key to preventing osteoporosis is to start early. It’s important to take care of your bones when you’re young.

Women, in particular, should focus on bone health during pregnancy, as both mom and baby need nutrients like calcium and vitamin D. As kids, getting the right nutrition is important to build strong bones, and bone mass grows until about age 30. To have the best bones possible, it’s best to strengthen them before they stop growing.

A healthy diet with plenty of calcium and vitamin D is crucial for strong bones. Adults should aim for 1,000 milligrams of calcium and at least 400 IU of vitamin D daily.

Regular exercise, like walking or strength training, also helps keep bones strong.
