Beacon Hospital’s Clinical Oncologist Dr. Kua Voon Fong says tumour profiling, also called molecular profiling, offers a smarter way to treat cancer.
“From a biopsy of the patient’s tumour, tumour profiling looks at the DNA of cancer cells to find biomarkers and genetic changes,” she explains.
Dr. Kua adds that the results give doctors important information early in the diagnosis.
“This is vital because the first course of treatment is often the most important in controlling, and sometimes even curing the cancer”, she says.
Tumour profiling is especially helpful for patients with advanced, rare, or treatment-resistant cancers.
It can benefit those who have run out of standard options, have multiple possible therapies, or face aggressive cancers.
With one in four Malaysians expected to get cancer by age 75, Dr. Kua says precision medicine through tumour profiling will play an increasingly important role in making sure patients get the right treatment at the right time.
