REMS Bone Health Assessment

REMS scan, beacon hospital

What Is REMS?

REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry) is an advanced, non-invasive, radiation-free ultrasound technology that assesses bone strength and fracture risk with high precision.

REMS evaluates both bone quantity and bone quality (microarchitecture), providing a more complete picture of bone health and enabling earlier, more accurate detection of osteoporosis and fracture risk, without the use of X-rays.
REMS analyses raw, unfiltered ultrasound radiofrequency signals to evaluate bone microarchitecture.
This allows our doctors to assess not just how dense the bone is, but how strong and resilient it truly is.

Key Advantages of REMS

Radiation-free and safe
Suitable for repeated scans and short-term monitoring
Enables early detection, prevention, and treatment follow-up
Suitable across different life stages

Skeletal Sites Assessed

The scan focuses on key skeletal sites:
Lumbar Spine
(up to 80 mm depth)
Proximal femur (Hip)
(up to 40 mm depth)
This enables accurate evaluation of the lumbar vertebrae and proximal femur (hip), which are common sites for osteoporotic fractures.

How Does a REMS Scan Work?

A REMS scan is performed using a portable ultrasound device that scans specific bone sites.
What to expect:
Painless and non-invasive
No radiation or injections
Takes approximately 20 minutes
No recovery time required
REMS uses advanced signal processing to:
Automatically identify the correct Region of Interest (ROI)
Filters out noise and artefacts
Detects bone interfaces accurately
Analyses bone signals and spectra automatically
This result in precise measurements that help doctors assess bone strength and fragility fracture risk, and determine the most appropriate next steps.

Who Should Consider a REMS Bone Health Assessment?

  • Adults with high risk of osteoporosis
  • Women at perimenopausal period, together with pap smear and mammogram (as women’s health assessment)
  • Postmenopausal women
  • Individuals with:
    • Osteoporosis or osteopenia
    • History of fragility fracture
    • Individuals with progressive hunch back and height loss
  • Those with a family history of fragility fracture
Early screening helps detect weak bones sooner, reduces fracture risk, and prevents long-term disability.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No. Fasting is not required. You may eat and drink as usual.

No. The scan is completely painless and non-invasive.

Coverage depends on your insurance policy. Our team will be happy to assist with insurance enquiries.

Our doctors will review the scan result with you and discuss preventive or treatment options if needed.

REMS is designed to assess bone density, bone quality, and fracture risk. It does not diagnose cancer. However, abnormal bone findings may prompt further investigations if clinically indicated.
