HIPEC for Peritoneal Metastasis: Leading the Way in Cancer Care

Beacon Hospital is proud to have successfully completed our first case of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), an advanced cancer treatment performed in specialised cancer centres.

HIPEC is primarily used for cancers that have spread within the abdominal cavity, including colorectal, ovarian, appendiceal, and other related cancers. The treatment combines cytoreductive surgery to remove visible tumours, followed by the infusion of a warmed chemotherapy solution into the abdomen for approximately 60–90 minutes. This approach targets microscopic cancer cells, allows higher local drug concentrations, and helps reduce systemic side effects. The heating of the chemotherapy further enhances its effectiveness.

Our patient with peritoneal metastasis underwent surgery involving the resection of visible tumour deposits in the abdomen and peritoneal surfaces, followed by the administration of HIPEC directly into the peritoneal cavity. The procedure was performed by Dr Lau Peng Choong, Consultant General & Upper GI Surgeon, Dr Tho Lye Mun, Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Dr Leong Kok Weng, Consultant Anaesthesiologist & Critical Care.

The patient recovered successfully and will continue ongoing treatment under the care of Dr Tho.
