Cervical Cancer Screening for Early Detection

Cervical cancer often develops silently without symptoms in its early stages. Regular screening with Pap smear or HPV DNA testing can help detect abnormal cervical cell changes early.

Book your cervical screening today or speak with experienced care team to learn more.

Why Cervical Cancer Screening Matters

Cervical cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women in Malaysia. Many cases are linked to persistent infection with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV).

HPV infection is common and may not cause noticeable symptoms. However, certain high-risk HPV types can cause abnormal cervical cell changes that may develop into cervical cancer over time.

Regular cervical cancer screening plays an important role in detecting these changes early.

What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer develops when abnormal cells form in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. These changes are usually associated with long-term infection with high-risk HPV types.

Cervical cancer typically develops slowly over several years. During this time, abnormal cervical cells may appear before progressing to cancer. Because of this gradual progression, screening tests such as Pap smear tests or HPV DNA tests can detect early cell changes before cancer develops.

Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

In the early stages, cervical cancer may not cause any symptoms. Symptoms may appear only when the disease becomes more advanced.

Women should consult a doctor if they experience symptoms such as:

These symptoms may be caused by conditions other than cervical cancer, but medical evaluation is recommended.

Who Should Consider Cervical Cancer Screening?

Women who are currently or previously sexually active may be exposed to human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV infection can occur even when there are no symptoms and even with a single sexual partner.

Cervical screening may be recommended for women who are:
👩‍❤️‍👨Currently sexually active
👩 Previously sexually active
📅 Within recommended screening age group
🩺 Concerned about cervical health

A doctor can advise on the most suitable screening approach based on individual risk factors.

Types of Cervical Cancer Screening Tests

Pap Smear Test

A Pap smear test collects cells from the cervix to detect abnormal cell changes that may develop into cancer if left untreated.

The procedure is quick and usually takes only a few minutes.

HPV DNA Test

The HPV DNA test detects the presence of high-risk HPV types associated with cervical cancer. This test can identify HPV infection before abnormal cervical cell changes develop.

Some screening programmes may combine both Pap smear and HPV testing depending on medical advice.

Early cervical screening can help detect abnormal cervical cell changes before they develop into cancer. Regular screening supports timely medical assessment and appropriate follow-up when needed. Speak with our care team to learn more about cervical cancer screening and whether a Pap smear or HPV DNA test may be suitable for you.
